Gingerbread House Competition

Smells of Gingerbread are in the air!

The time has finally arrived for the 21st Annual National Gingerbread House Competition™!  After the judging and the awards ceremony are over, the display will be set up throughout the Omni Grove Park Hotel and will be open for viewing from November 20th through January 2nd.

The entire house is constructed entirely of edible materials (except for the base).

Most entries are on the main lobby floor in both wings. Get a map at the information desk in the lobby. As you walk to the various display areas, see some of the 80 decorated trees in the historic, grand hotel. And get your photo made in the big sleigh in the lobby.

The grand prize winning entry and selected other winners will be removed from the display during the third week of December as the resort transports them to New York City for its 13th straight appearance on ABC’s “Good Morning America.”

As a means to preserve the overall guest experience, The Omni Grove Park Inn will open its doors to the public to view the Gingerbread display and holiday splendor from Sunday through Thursday, excluding holidays.  A $10 parking charge will be in effect for all drive on guests (one charge per vehicle, based on availability).  The charge will cover the increased number of employees necessary to man the additional traffic flow and to provide greater guest service as well as directional signage for the holidays.

A Special Holiday Meal By Biltmore Chefs & Winemakers

Turkey and Cornbread Dressing | Sweet Potatoes | Haricot Vert | Creamed Corn | Apple Tart

The Vanderbilts were known for their hospitality as well as holiday celebrations that highlighted the ultimate in food and wine for their guests. What did George and Edith Vanderbilt like to eat on special occasions? Our menu book indicates their enjoyment of baked turkey with cornbread dressing prepared by Ellen Johnson, an Asheville local who translated traditional Appalachian recipes into favored fare at Biltmore House.

Try Ellen’s recipe for yourself, plus an array of delightful side dishes and desserts guaranteed to make your holiday celebrations extra special. Click on the links above for recipes.

Guest Letter:  Dear Brea,...I also wanted to let you know your name came up repeatedly when my friends and I stayed in Asheville in May at a different cabin.  I knew it wouldn’t be as good as your cabins but I was still surprised at how much we missed all your comforts.  The cabin and view were nice but the kitchen (which is my domain on vacation) was woefully under stocked with cheap pans, dull knives and garage sale dishes.  They didn’t even have salt and pepper in the cabinet!  The doorknob fell off the second day and we had to buy a screwdriver to put it back together since there were no basic tools in the house.  We also missed your fluffy robes and silky sheets.  You have ruined us for other rentals!!!    I hope we can visit one of your cabins again soon.  Cheryl
