Hickory Nut Gap Farm

Just a short, gorgeous 20 minute drive from Asheville, NC and only 8+ miles from our cabins, a visit to the farm is a great way to see first hand the landscape where your food is grown and to meet the people who make it happen. Here, you can buy 100% grassfed beef, pastured pork, free range eggs and have pastured poultry.

The grassfed beef is tender and flavorful like it should be. Pastured Pork is the result of raising pigs outside on pasture and in the woods. The flavor of Hickory Nut Gap meats takes you back to your agrarian roots.

Hickory Nut Gap's animals consume only their mothers milk and forages during their entire life while rotationally grazing on pasture. This production model eliminates the need for administering subtherapeutic antibiotics. If an animal were to become sick it would be treated as needed but not allowed to enter their meat supply. Growth hormones are never used at Hickory Nut Gap Meats.

The land of Hickory Nut Gap Farm is jointly owned by the six children of James and Elspeth Clarke. In 2008 the land was put into a conservation easement with the Southern Appalachian Highlands Conservancy. Protected for eternity the land will remain managed by the family and their agricultural pursuits. Some of the six children, now grown with children and grandchildren of their own remain at the farm and close by in the area.

From Asheville: 240 East, exit towards 74-A East, Bat Cave, Blue Ridge Parkway, Chimney Rock. Follow 74-A approximately 9 miles. Turn left on Sugar Hollow Rd. The farm store is the first building on the right.

Mt. Mitchell

The Observation Deck atop Mt. Mitchell is a short walk from the parking area.

Located in a 1,855-acre North Carolina State Park, Mount Mitchell (elevation 6,684 feet) is the highest point east of the Rocky Mountains and Mississippi River. Located about 35 miles northeast of downtown Asheville, you reach Mount Mitchell via a very scenic drive on the Blue Ridge Parkway. From the Parkway, take NC Highway 128 all the way to the summit. From the parking are, walk up a 1/4 paved accessible trail to the observation deck.

Because of the altitude, many of the plants and animals are like those native to alpine environments of Canada. Mt. Mitchell is part of the Black Mountain range, formed more than a billion years ago. Six peaks in the small range are among the ten highest in the eastern United States. Tour the exhibit hall and dine in the restaurant (open May-October). Hike the highest North Carolina hiking trails (see below for more), including Deep Gap Trail to the second highest peak east of the Rockies, Mt. Craig. Tent camping is allowed ($12/day), but showers and hot water are not provided.

15 Tips for Driving the Blue Ridge Parkway

1  Gas up before you get on the parkway. There are no gas stations on the parkway. Gas stations are also located on intersecting highways near the Parkway exits. .
2. Go slowly and enjoy the scenery. The speed limit is 45 mph. Although there are no stop signs or stoplights, this is not a freeway.
3.Stop at the overlooks to soak in the views. If an overlook is busy, take a short walk to find a more secluded spot.
4. Take a jacket. With the elevation changes along the drive, the temperature may vary as much as 20 to 30 degrees. At the highest elevations, the hottest summer days only reach into the 70s.
5. Watch for hikers and bicyclists.
6. Be certain to take your camera. Ask someone to take a picture of you along the way.
7.  Take a blanket and picnic. There are several picnic areas along the way, and many green areas along the drive to stop.
8. Restrooms are located at major stops such as picnic areas and visitor centers.
9. Please do not disturb wildlife or plant life. Bear sightings are rare.
10. If you are into bird watching or wildflowers, be sure to take your guidebooks.
11. Along the Parkway, you will see numbered mileposts. The zero milepost marker is at the north end of the Parkway in Virginia. Numbers progress as you drive south.
12. Dogs and other pets must be on a leash or under physical restraint at all times while along the Parkway and hiking trails.
13. Parking is permitted on road shoulders (unless noted). Be sure to have all four wheels are off the pavement.
14. To help plan your journey, begin at the Parkway Visitor Center that is located in Asheville.
15. For emergencies along the Parkway, call 1-800-ParkWatch.
16. Road closures and conditions, along with weather reports, are available by calling the Parkway information line at (828) 298-0398. Many sections of the Parkway close in winter months because of snow and ice.

Guest Letter:  Dear Brea,...I also wanted to let you know your name came up repeatedly when my friends and I stayed in Asheville in May at a different cabin.  I knew it wouldn’t be as good as your cabins but I was still surprised at how much we missed all your comforts.  The cabin and view were nice but the kitchen (which is my domain on vacation) was woefully under stocked with cheap pans, dull knives and garage sale dishes.  They didn’t even have salt and pepper in the cabinet!  The doorknob fell off the second day and we had to buy a screwdriver to put it back together since there were no basic tools in the house.  We also missed your fluffy robes and silky sheets.  You have ruined us for other rentals!!!    I hope we can visit one of your cabins again soon.  Cheryl
