Why Visit Asheville

One of the reasons to visit Asheville is the scenery: Clouds comb out like low smoke over the mountains, the hills like tired, mossy stones.

You may find that pretty much nobody in Asheville is actually from Asheville. This isn't anything new. The town owes its monuments to visitors gone native: In 1895, George Vanderbilt used his railroad fortune to create the Biltmore, a self-sustaining high-country redoubt for an artistic soul grown weary of city distraction. Eighteen years later, E.W. Grove, chronic hiccups sufferer and medicinal-tonic magnate, established the Grove Park Inn as a mountain refuge from industrial toxins.

Perhaps some recent arrivals come for the recuperative benefits of the mountain air, but most of the people come for the vibe. Whether you're here for a few days or a week or more, you're guaranteed to fall under the spell of a city that's often called "The Paris of the South."

Include a stay in our Asheville vacation rental cabins for a perfect romantic getaway, family vacation, weekend destination, girl getaway or to celebrate a special milestones. You may be considering a visit to The Biltmore Estate for the first time or be celebrating your wedding anniversary in a private mountain cabin, our fabulous vacation rentals will exceed your expectations.

Small Town Big on Art

Asheville is consistently named among the Top 25 Small Towns for Art by AmericanStyle, and last year it took home top honors. The city has dozens of art galleries and hosts bi-monthly art crawls from April through December. Be sure to check out ZaPow!, which is billed as the only gallery in the Southeast specializing in illustration and pop-culture art. The newly revived River Arts District is where you'll find warehouses that have been converted into studios, and studio strolls are held on a regular basis here. Back downtown, the city has commissioned many pieces of public art. There are artists who have also created elaborate murals on the sides of buildings (example photo at left) and even on the Interstate underpass.

Food Scene

Asheville has a remarkable culinary scene, with talented chefs from all over the world settling here to open restaurants, and many of them are committed to using local ingredients whenever possible. President Obama has visited 12 Bones Barbecue on two of his three visits to the city, while Anthony Bourdain held a private reception at Cúrate Tapas Bar on a recent visit. If you like chocolate, you can't go wrong with French Broad Chocolate Lounge, which offers handmade truffles, liquid truffles, caramels, chocolate bars and more. For more info on local independent restaurants, check out Asheville Independent Restaurants.

Over the past few years, the food-truck craze has caught on, with mobile kitchens serving up Korean barbecue tacos (El Kimchi), crepes and empanadas (Ceci's Culinary Tour), Lebanese street food (Gypsy Queen Cuisine) and more. You'll find these food trucks all over town, at several of the breweries, and at the new food truck lot downtown.

Dance to the Beat of a Different Drum

For a firsthand taste of Asheville’s bohemian vibe, saunter over to downtown’s Pritchard Park (Patton Avenue at College Street) on Friday nights, when a huge, informal drum and dance circle appears after 6 p.m. Feel the beat in your body from blocks away.  Dance to the rhythm of your soul.  Feel the freedom unleashed in your spirit. The unsanctioned collective of Asheville’s free spirits, of which there are many, can grow to more than 100 people (locals and tourists), letting loose as professional and amateur percussionists drum out beats until 10 p.m. If you want to join in, bring an instrument – anything from a cowbell to a set of jangling keys will do.

Guest Letter:  Dear Brea,...I also wanted to let you know your name came up repeatedly when my friends and I stayed in Asheville in May at a different cabin.  I knew it wouldn’t be as good as your cabins but I was still surprised at how much we missed all your comforts.  The cabin and view were nice but the kitchen (which is my domain on vacation) was woefully under stocked with cheap pans, dull knives and garage sale dishes.  They didn’t even have salt and pepper in the cabinet!  The doorknob fell off the second day and we had to buy a screwdriver to put it back together since there were no basic tools in the house.  We also missed your fluffy robes and silky sheets.  You have ruined us for other rentals!!!    I hope we can visit one of your cabins again soon.  Cheryl
