Why Visit Asheville

Sliding Rock (see the video) is a 60' natural rock slide with a 6-7 foot deep pool at the base - perfect for you folks looking for a waterfall to slide down.

I guarantee you will become a 10 year old along with your children!

The slide is a Forest Service recreation area with lifeguards and staff are on duty from Memorial Day week end through Labor Day. Beginning in May 2014, the fee to access the parking area will increase to $2 per person (from $1 per person). You can also buy a season pass for $25. Parking is somewhat limited, so go early if you can. It will be crowded on a summer week end. I think kids have to be a certain size to slide alone, but can sit on the lap of an adult. There are bathrooms which are open in season. For more info, call the US Forest Service at 828-877-3350.

Directions: From the intersection of Hwys 64, 280 and 276 north near Brevard, drive north on Hwy 276 for 7.5 miles and turn left into the parking area and up to the booth where you pay. You'll see a 'US Fee Area' sign before the turn - there's also a sign before the turn if you are coming south on 276 from the Blue Ridge Parkway.

Xavier Rudd at Orange Peel

Part multi-instrumentalist, part mythical creature, singer-songwriter/surfer/environmentalist/cultural activist Xavier Rudd took the didgeridoo from tribal instrument to legitimate dance club beat-maker. The musician, who lives in Australia, “gradually refined his globally influenced collage of world music — a matchless mixture of reggae, funk, blues, folk, and nearly every other sort of song with the ability to stimulate people’s spirits,” according to a press release. Spirit Bird, released in 2012, includes “Follow the Sun(listen) — his biggest single to date. That song is set to a video lush with Australian wildlife and glorious beaches that’ll have you making vacation plans. But before you book a plane ticket, catch Rudd’s show at The Orange Peel on Saturday, June 21, at 9 p.m. $24 advance/$26 day of show. Ash Grunwald also performs. Movie Filmed in Hendersonville

Movie makers released an intense first look at a horror film shot in the Hendersonville area, "Honeymoon," starring "Game of Thrones" actress Rose Leslie.

The movie, "Honeymoon," (watch trailer) which was shot in and around Hendersonville in 2013, is about a newly married couple whose honeymoon ends up being ruined by a series of strange events.

The clip, released June 16, shows Leslie's Bea and Paul, played by Harry Treadaway of Showtime's "Penny Dreadful" returning to a rustic, secluded cabin. Bea has gone missing in the night, and Paul finds her naked and disoriented in the woods. From there, Bea's behavior gets increasingly strange, according to the film synopsis. reposted from Asheville Citizen-Times

Jet Boat Rides

The 12-passenger New Zealand-style jet boats take you on a 40-minute thrill ride complete with 180-degree spins and lots of spray on the scenic lake in the shadow of the Smokies.

Originally designed to travel on New Zealand rivers, these are lightweight aluminum boats that can turn on a dime, hydroplane at speeds up to 50 mph but are much less noisier than motorboats, and are safe for everyone from 2- to 92-year-olds, said Capt. Claudine Dervaes.

“Jet boats do spins but it’s a scenic as well as a thrill ride,” Dervaes said. “We take people to see a 65-foot waterfall, go under a train trestle, and to see million-dollar homes. And it’s safe even for the little ones who are too young to go on a raft trip, they’re not too young for a jet boat.”

The boat ride adventures, which began in 2003, start at the office in Bryson City, about an hour west of Asheville. They recently began offering the following combo trips to give people a broader Smoky Mountain experience.

• The Goldmine Loop Hike/Ride is a two-mile hike in the Smokies that lasts about 45 minutes, with a hike to an old homestead, and time for swimming and lunch during the boat ride. It is appropriate for young children.

• The Forney Creek Hike/Ride is a four-mile hike ending at Forney Creek and Fontana Lake for swim, lunch and boat ride. The most popular of the hike options, it lasts about 1.5 hours.

• Adventure in the Park is a longer jetboat ride to Forney Creek in the Smokies, without the 4-mile hike. Snack and drink are included in this trip that lasts two hours.
